Working with local schools
Local schools are supported with the curriculum through visits and through boxes of artefacts. A designated trustee (ex-teacher) is linked to schools and is proactive in developing links and securing funding for resources. Schools display their work at the museum during the summer months, thereby celebrating the learning of children and young people in the museum.
Sandford School - Visit to Axbridge 9th July 2025
Sandford School is a local primary school that has a very productive partnership with our museum. Pupils' learning and engagement has been enhanced by our resource boxes and by annual visits to the town.
This year, years 1-2 visited the town to enrich their Local Study project. A whole-town experience was provided by including the children's town trail (including the old Methodist church), St John's church, the Town Hall as well as the museum in rotation. Each venue provided information, allowed for questioning and provided a written activity.
27 pupils and 8 adults enjoyed the day which had a huge impact on their understanding and their skills. It was wonderful to see Dads attending to help as well! Flexible working afforded this important development.
'Thank you so much everyone for your time, knowledge, and enthusiasm, especially in the heat! The children had a brilliant day, and the adults all learnt something too!' - Chloe Davis, class teacher
This experiential model provides a unique learning experience and enhances the pre-learning that has taken place in the classroom. Schools that would like to participate in the Axbridge town experience are welcome to make contact.
Thank you to team Axbridge for your generosity of help on the day -- Dean Packham, Paul Hughes, Stephanie Teychenne Gall, and John Page.

Axbridge First School Academy and the Victorians
During 2024 the children in Axbridge First School Academy studied 'The Victorians'. An assembly focussing on the Workhouse was arranged and run in conjunction with the museum outreach initiative. The costumes the children wore are available for all to try on in the museum.
Visits and talks were arranged prior to the museum opening in April. We also produced resource boxes for hands-on use in school. Contents include: a range of costumes for dressing up, coins, photographs, postcards, a letter, earthenware bottles and containers for ink, carpet beaters, a hunting horn, a bed-warmer, a wooden top, various books and posters and a christening gown, kindly lent by Anne Day
